Championship dreams, unrealistic expectations

So you want to know how your favorite Power Five team can get to a conference championship game?

Most scenarios are fairly easy: Win and earn your spot. Lose and you can find yourself staring at a four-tie way, with the tiebreaker being as complicated as trying to learn how to crochet. Oregon is the only team that has clinched a spot in the conference title game.

Here is a look at how the Power Five conference races are shaping up.

SEC:
East: Don’t look now, but Missouri is in first place despite being blown out 34-0 by second place Georgia last month.
West: The winner of Saturday’s game between Alabama and Mississippi State likely goes on to win the division.

Big 12:
Straight up confusion: Baylor, TCU, Kansas State are all at 5-1. Playoff committee says if teams end up with same record they will recognize co-champions. Uh huh, if you say so.

Pac-12:
North: Oregon has already clinched the North division.
South: Arizona State is at 5-1, while UCLA, USC, Arizona all have two conference losses.

Big Ten:
East: Ohio State owns tiebreaker over Michigan State.
West: Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin all sit at 4-1 in the division.

ACC:
Coastal: Florida State owns the tiebreaker over Clemson due to victory on Sept. 20.
Atlantic: Duke in the driver’s seat. Wins division with two more conference victories.

By the numbers:

72.9%: Percentage of Wisconsin’s opponents drives that end in six plays or less.

202: Points Florida State has allowed this season.

183: Points Florida State opponents have scored off of their turnovers.

Now to the games: (rankings are from the Associated Press Top 25, betting lines subject to change)
